Zelgadis first appears in the first season of the Slayers TV series, looking for an orihalcon statue that contains the Philosopher's Stone. One of his men, Zolf, had almost found it at a bandit hideout. That's where Lina Inverse, the series' heroine, showed up, blasted the bandits (and Zolf), and took the bandits' treasure -- including the orihalcon. While Lina and her companion Gourry Gabriev were resting in an inn, Zelgadis, shrouded in robes, asked to make a deal. From here on the first Slayers story arc unfolds: Zelgadis tries to buy the orihalcon off of Lina, but she refuses. It's then Zelgadis resorts to attacking Lina and Gourry.
Tricked into thinking that Rezo, an enigmatic red priest, is their ally, Lina and Gourry believe that Zelgadis is their enemy. When some of Rezo's men capture Lina, Zelgadis sets her free. At the end of the first story arc, after the defeat of the demon Shabranigdu, Zelgadis leaves the company of Lina and Gourry. In the middle of the next story arc, in Sairaag, Zelgadis reappears, saving Lina, Gourry, and now Amelia, from their new enemy Eris.
Zelgadis is a combination of golem, demon, and human -- a chimera. Originally a human - and a descendant of Rezo's - Rezo turned him into a chimera, twisting Zel's wish to be more powerful. Zelgadis was after the Philosopher's Stone so that he could kill Rezo and cure his body. He is ashamed of his curse. However, being a chimera means his body is as hard a stone, and renders him invulnerable to regular forces (ex: a sword). He is usually shrouded in robes. He also gets a bit embarrassed when people (usually Lina ^_-) bring up the subject of romance around him.
Zel is an excellent swordsman, and a very talented magic user. His magic powers are related to shamanist magic or astral magic. His is capable of firing off a Ra Tilt, one of the most powerful astral spells to exist.
